Most family lawyers, on their websites, will refer to being members of Resolution. Here at Ellisons, all our family lawyers are Resolution members. But what exactly does that mean?
Resolution is a national organisation of family lawyers who are committed to a non-confrontational and constructive approach to resolving family disputes. We aim to look at the needs of your family, putting your children first.
Resolution was founded by a group of lawyers who wanted to find a better way for families to separate than the age-old practice of going to court. The organisation has gone from strength to strength, and it is now unusual for family lawyers not to be members.
We sign up to a Code of Practice and this year Resolution has made 2025 the year of the code. This means that our clients can expect us to:
- Listen to you, be honest with you and treat you with respect
- Explain all the options and give you confidence to make the right decisions
- Help you focus on what’s important in the long term
- Help you balance financial and emotional costs with what you want to achieve
- Work with others to find the right approach and the best solutions for you
- Manage stress in what can already be a stressful situation
And we should expect your ex partner/spouse’s solicitor to do the same.
Resolution also campaigns for law reform and pioneers new ways of working with their Code of Practice. Resolution were instrumental in lobbying for the no-fault divorce that was introduced in 2022. They contributed to the Language Matters programme which promotes the use of clearer, more user-friendly language by family lawyers and courts. They continue to lobby for a reform to the law relating to cohabiting rather than married couples. In the past year they have reported on the impact of domestic abuse in financial settlements and court proceedings.
